BRASS band enthusiasts – especially followers of Brighouse and Rastrick Band – will be in their element this weekend as the new concert season strikes up.
The Calderdale-based musicians, together with The Black Dyke Band and Fodens Band, will play tomorrow evening at the 11th Great Northern Brass Arts Festival gala concert in Manchester.

And tomorrow morning shoppers in Brighouse will have first pick of tickets for an autumn "massed bands" presentation in Huddersfield next month which will feature the all-girls band Boobs and Brass.

Tickets for the event, at Huddersfield Town Hall on Saturday, October 25, go on general sale at Fawcett's Stationers, Commercial Street, Brighouse, tomorrow between 10am and noon.

After that, they will be available at all Kirklees booking offices from Wednesday (tel: 01484 223200).

Brighouse and Rastrick's concert secretary David Howe said the band's October offering was unique in that it brought together the Calderdale musicians and the all-female band from Kettering, formed in 2006 to raise money for charity, particularly the Breast Cancer Campaign. The band, who wear pink jackets, had become an instant success, he said.

"To visit a prestigious venue such as Huddersfield Town Hall, and sit alongside an elite band, will certainly be the pinnacle of their engagements so far, according to the ladies' management team. Their players are paid no expenses for their efforts so that all the money earned at concerts is passed to their chosen charity, and Brighouse and Rastrick are delighted to support those aims by staging this very special event," Mr Howe said.

"Even Brighouse and Rastrick's chosen music will pay tribute to the large female presence by selecting music such as March Lorraine, Sweet Georgia Brown, Ruby Tuesday and Italian Girl in Algiers which should appeal greatly to the expected full house.

"Each band will have separate 30-minute slots, with the remaining time devoted to the combined talents of all 70 musicians in rousing opening and closing sets. This will be a truly colourful spectacle as the purple and gold of Brighouse and Rastrick contrasts with the ladies' stunning pink."

Tickets for tomorrow night's concert at the Bridgewater Hall, which starts at 7.15pm and concludes a day-long festival of brass in Manchester, are now on sale (tel: 0161 907 9000).

  • Clifton and Lightcliffe Brass Band will kick off a new autumn concert season at St Matthew's Church, Lightcliffe, on Saturday, September 13 (7.30pm). Tickets (£7.50 adults, £4 children) are available from Peter Sutcliffe, Tony Hillam (tel: 01274 675405) or David Broadbent (tel: 01274 875242).
