THE household waste recycler, Kerbside, has a huge support base in Calderdale, and could help the council save thousands of pounds by upping its present recycling rate. Much of this groundswell arises from its use of employably-challenged workers, an
d its local base.

It could do for Calderdale what a dozen Focsas or Sitas could never do, but seemingly the council is prepared to watch it die. It has less than 120 days before its reserves run out (next January, we are told), and it desperately needs a survival strategy.

The new contractor, Sita, has come from France to make money, and its paymaster, Calderdale MBC, has signed a legally-binding long-term contract.

Kerbside would have no hope of going to France, and getting a contract over there. Britain is creating its own slump by giving jobs away, and in this case it seems our 51 councillors are merely watching on the sidelines. Only seven of them were able to vote on the details of this contract (all Conservatives). But there are also Lib-Dem and Labour groups on the council, both of which have members on the actual Scrutiny Panel which can investigate problems like Kerbside's exclusion. The lack of information on this whole issue amazes me!

It's no good Hebden Royd Parish Council supporting their local firm, if their three local (Lib Dem) Calderdale councillors aren't getting to grips with the problem. Similarly the recent Labour leaflet in Skircoat had lots to say about Kerbside, but failed to mention that the chairman of the inactive Scrutiny Panel is a Labour councillor! Kerbside has even had directors who are/were councillors.

The fightback campaign needs to start in the Town Hall, but must be taken to the Ombudsman. Only an external judgment will cause any alteration.

It took a public inquiry to show up the council's deviousness on the Brighouse town centre redevelopment, and that was after 10 years of battling. Kerbside has less than 120 days. Once again, local democracy is failing.

What is this sudden emphasis on SITA being a French company? Was there the same furore when FOCSA; a Spanish company, were the successful bidder against the then in house provider? Please refresh my memory! Who says that the Kerbside service was, or is, better than the service given to two thirds of the borough by FOCSA, and now SITA.?
Are Kerbside providing this service at break even, or to make a profit? Surely to make a profit; so that their employees; and of course Mr. Brannigan, can get paid. So it is right for Kerbside to make a profit, but not SITA? I fully understand the social enterprise arguement around all of this, so I think do SITA, they were totally prepared to incorporate ALL of Kerbside's staff into their operation, or to work with them in another way. Mr.Brannigan, because of his concern for the less fortunate in society, will get his reward in heaven, but I am beginning to wonder has he a hidden agenda? A nice little earner here.

I totally agree that we need Calderdale to recycle more as whole.

Good heavens, simple minds really do take up a lot of our time don't they Friendly Elected Member, or the nameless one?
Kerbside, very simply is our choice, the public, we the people whom judge by results, and not the perambulations of a Cabinet whom disregarded the vote against SITA by our elected people. Will you deny this, for if you do you will be being dishonest.
As for rewards in heaven, how silly can you be? A person shows interest in others and works for the common good, which we, the public recognise and support. Then by your standards, he is less than perfect?
You are to talk, when you cannot even be courageous enough to pen your own name to the garbage you trouble us with.
Kerbside was, still is the primary choice of the public, what has the employment of foreign profiteers to offer in like merit and public esteem?
Hell, they have already started telling you what they will not do, so what did they sign up for?
Another Cabinet secret?
