Calder Grove,
Mytholmroyd
WE are a country that is supposed to be taking a grip on smoking, for the benefit of the nation's health.

I was pleased to hear Alan Johnson, Health Secretary, on TV state that he was considering that cigarettes should be out of sight in retail ou
tlets and that vending machines should only be in venues where young people do not have access.

I was then surprised to hear that Scotland had already moved on the first issue and that other European countries have implemented the second.

Why are we trailing on these issues? Our Government should be at the forefront, not lagging behind. It is just another example of New Labour's ineffectiveness.

Then there is the issue of alcohol related illness, Calder-dale having the worst alcohol-related hospital admissions in West Yorkshire (Courier, May 23).

When is the Govenment going to tackle binge and excessive drinking? To start, there could be a ban on alcohol advertising, as happened with tobacco. Not only are binge drinkers at risk of damaging their health but also the many others who drink in excess of the recommended limits.

What we need is positive action to help reduce the ill health caused by alcohol and tobacco and we need it now!

Bampton-Smith
(Lib Dem, Luddenden Foot)

Typical of the Limp Dims this one - why not put Pies and Chips under the counter too, to stop the obese getting fatter!

No government has been able to stop binge drinking. There are records going back hundreds of years that talk about the drink problem in not just England but northern Europe as a whole. The fact is it is a long standing part of our culture that we have tried throughout history to to stop. Many of our traditional Christian religious groups where formed in the desire to sort out this problem - the sad fact is binge drinking for many makes the horrible lives of many people in this country live just about livable

What sort of a country are we becoming? As tobacco and alcohol are legal products we should be able to buy them where we want. I am sick to death of being told what I can and can not do, usually by people that have what i consider disgusting habitsi.e career politicians that have never done a days honest work!

LibDem waste of space. There are more important issues than binge drinking. Who sets the recommended limits anyway. Diabetics benefit from alcohol consumption. It don't half reduce the blood sugar level.
