Re: The tragic circumstances surrounding Stephen Gately has put sudden cardiac death in the news. Kate Hodal reports

Published Date: November 2 2009

I read the feature about Stephen Gately's sudden death in under 35 year olds. I have always had a heart complaint from birth and visit Leeds hospital every six months. I am 35 now so I have been going for quite a few years. Five years ago I was found to have hypotrophic cardiomyopathy. I was fitted with my ICD (defibrillator) to help me. I am one of the lucky ones. It is hard for families to cope when their loved ones die from sudden death and it is not something you know you have unless you are diagnosed or checked for. I am glad you explained in your article about this complaint. And I would like to say thank you for bringing this subject up in the Courier. Keep up the good work.
