I read Brian Tideswell's throw-away comment on Yorkshire becoming a state of the Republic of China, following the magnificent Games opening ceremony. I say never! Better to become a state of Lancashire.

When I was young, I foolishly thought politi
cs and sport were separate and never the twain shall meet. How naive I was.

These 2008 Games are everything to do with politics, especially to China, who have received enormous kudos by being awarded them in the first place.

Incidentally, the Games were awarded to them in 2001 on the proviso that human rights would dramatically improve in the ensuing seven years – especially in Tibet.

Anyone with an ounce of intelligence knew there was more chance of Gordon Brown becoming the Chinese Premier.

I no longer hold with a philosophy that what happens thousands of miles away has nothing to do with us.

I hold to the Bette Midler From a Distance ballad school of thought and the line that says: "We are instruments marching in a common band!"

Didn't someone once say it takes a few good people to do nothing for evil to succeed.

In 2008, it is as true as it ever was.

Politics have always been in sport.

Human rights have been dramatically improved, the Itv camera crew filming dissidents would have been taken and shot only months ago.

China is a massive country, we are not big enough to bully them.

the games have been great!

I am 43 - every Olympic games I can remember has had a political element to it. 2012 in London will be no different as someone somewhere will find British policy in 2012 objectionable. I do wish people here did not try and take the moral high ground on this, British human rights are not better than anywhere else in fact recently the UN has politely suggested that the British governments new terrorist laws have the potential to be misused to stifle normal legitimate political freedoms, of course these worries being expressed about the loss of basic freedoms of the British never make our media but will probably be an issue in 2012 if these laws as the UN is suggesting are misused.

Indeed. I fear the protesters in 2012 climbing Nelson's Column and unfurling their 'Free the Malvinas' banners
