Cinema just like it used to be...

Coronation Street,
Elland.

I HOPE that your writer, Tony Dawber, his daughter and mother-in-law would find our Rex cinema in Elland to be more the type of cinema he craves for ("No soul in the picture house", Courier, April 26).
He would surely find most of the features he misses at the multiplex cinemas and without having to travel so far for the privilege.

True, being a single-screen original cinema, we can only offer the choice of one film at any particular time of day, but we are up to date with our choice of the best available films, details of which can be found just a few pages away in this very newspaper!

He would receive personal service and be able to buy an ice cream – at normal shop prices – from a tray at the interval. It might be me serving him, rather than a girl, but he can't have everything!

We would not take kindly to him clambering over the seats and throwing stuff at the management, however, but if he is prepared to behave himself he will find a warm welcome.

Charles Morris
(Proprietor, Rex Cinema)

It's no frills, plain and simple without a HUGE price tag which is just the way I like it....

We used to go to the Rex regular, but unfortunately were put off about a year ago when a couple who looked like Wayne and Waynetta Slob came in and sat nearby. They were obviously local due to the way they shouted out every so often to others there - this I could cope with, but it was the stench. After doing voluntary work with elderly, I know that smell - it's people who have not wiped themselves, not showered and it's festered. Elderly have an excuse - but they were just dirty smelly *******'s
I was heaving by the time I left. Sorry, but never again :(

went to Elland Cinema as a boy ! It was called The Central Cinema ! anyone from Elland will tell you that.
Still go today on a regular basis. How many more remember it from the 40's Don't like the name "Rex" but everything else is ok.

The REX is belting, I can take my kids and know that I don't need a second mortage to buy sweets etc!
Darren, if they smelt as bad as you say why didn't you just move seats?
And before someone else mentions it not all locals are like this or do they behave in this manner, some of us are clean unsmelly folks, who enjoy a trip to a great cinema with good old fashioned character.
