Whitehall Road,
Leeds.

THE other day I had cause to drive to the refuse recycling centre at Sowerby Bridge to unload about 15 empty wine bottles in the bottle bank.
There was a large queue of cars and a traffic jam as a result. I parked away from the dump and walked a short distance to the facility where I was denied access for "health and safety reasons", being told I had to drive in and out.

Two questions occur to me.

Since I was only walking to the right hand extreme of the dump, where the bottle bank is situated, I was in no danger from other cars but, more importantly, if you do drive in and park are you not then in equal danger, to-ing and fro-ing from the skips etc?

In saying this I assume that customers are not intended to launch their refuse into skips or bottle banks from the safety of their car seats.

If I lived near the dump and didn't want to add to the congestion or, more importantly, didn't own a car, what would be my options?

Mines a pint,

Sowerby Bridge 14/05/2008 14:50:19
I had the same problem, now I take all my recycled items, bottles, cans and cardboard to Tesco's at Sowerby Bridge, where they have plenty of room for cars with a massive car park, I have never had any problems, in fact I have only ever met one other car there at the same time. And you can walk in too.

typical council thinking, you cant walk in the waste site unless you have got out of a car.

With the number of people who park on the green walkway its a surprise they let you out of your car at all, perhaps they are intended to launch their refuse into skips or bottle banks from the safety of their car seats.

I am not surprised they dont let pedestrians in at halifax, the way the council vehicles tear past the queued up customers on the wrong side of the road you are hardly safe in you cars let alone on foot.

A lot of people have taken to putting their rubbish in black bags and dropping them on moor tops. There's no queues, not much traffic and reduced risk of being run over.

I had a similar experience over the weekend at Brighouse's tip. I was asked by a neighbour to take some rubbish down to the tip because the bin men had decided not to take them, leaving the two unopened bags at the side of her bin for two weeks. I drove down and found a traffic jam so got out of my car and walked to the skip with the two bags in hand only to be abused by one of the workers on the site, suddenly another two workers appeared and joined in the abuse. I was very angry but i kept my mouth shut, less restrained people would have put the three workers in hospital. I walked away, deciding i would write a letter to the local council. I didn't bother. I know that such complaints are ignored. The workers at the tip were just jobsworths doing what jobsworths do.

I have decided i won't be visiting the again, next time i ned to dispose of any waste i will be paying a visit to the man in charge of the tip, Clr Graham Reason and will leave my rubbish for him to sort out.
