Railway Street,
Todmorden.
I SEE, with alarm, that the future of Kerbside is in jeopardy ("It's us or them; take your pick of recyclers", Courier, July 18).

To my mind this is further pr
oof that Calderdale Council does not take the whole issue of recycling seriously.

It has removed recycling points which has made is harder for people without cars to dispose of recyclable items and now the council threatens the future of Kerbside.

We should not just be looking at the financial aspect of awarding the tender to collect refuse to the lowest bidder. We all know that the new firm will pocket the profits with little or no regard to the people of Calderdale.

Kerbside, however, has a very well thought out social aspect to its work. It offers work to those who find difficulty in obtaining employment.

This is the sort of work which has almost disappeared from the work scene. In previous times the mills and factories, for all their faults, found employment for the unskilled and gave them a pride and purpose in their lives.

It is the possible loss of this side of Kerbside's efforts which I deplore and would urge other people to press for its retention. We need more outlets for our recycling, not fewer.

John R. Hodgson
