The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) has produced a report today saying there is still massive uncertainty over the outlook for the British economy.

It is critical that the Govern-ment has a plan to tackle the public finances, one that is flexible enough to adapt to the changing economic situation.

The IFS rightly points out that cutting spending further this year would be extremely dangerous given the weakness of the economy.

Not surprisingly, the Conserva-tives are now desperately trying to play down their desire to do just that.

When, and by how much, public spending needs to be cut must be based on sound economic indicators, not Tory political dogma.

(Lib Dem, Calder Ward)

Could the IFS's report possibly be interpreted as saying it would be dangerous to cut back on public spending if we were spending money we could afford. Surely spending money which we don't have is economic suicide?

Should this letter have been addressed to the Financial Times?

RIP OFF BRITAIN!
Alive, well, and being run at full belt by inadequate Councils and Robber MPs.
Willingly stoked up by core industries like the Power suppliers.
Cheaper, better, the Lady announced at a stroke, letting the Wolves buy all.
Some Wolves, intent on a killing, could'nt even cope with what they grabbed!
Trains, buses, power, forever in a state of flux!
But in reality the more hands in the till the more costly anything becomes.
The circus is coming to every Town again, watch for the glossy, glib promises and then await yet another fleecing and the disappointments.
