What sort of encouragement do we have to recycle?
The Acapulco's efforts to help the planet seem to be frustrated by idiotic rules and regulations and lack of common sense and those of us who care enough to take our cans, plastics etc to the waste sites often feel it's a waste of time. Last week, I took two large bags of plastic bottles, collected from elderly and car-less friends who are unable to take them, to our local site.
Along with four other people, I was told to throw them in the ordinary waste skip as the plastics skip had been taken away.
I refused, and objected that caring members of the public had bothered to bring a lot of re-cycling only to be told that there was no facility to put it into and that the men there were "not allowed to stack things". This was not a one-off, it happens too often.
Surely, when one skip is taken away, another could be left in its place? We want a better service than this, it's a real discouragement to those of us who are passionate about recycling.
Employers working at the sites also need to ensure that cars are reversed into the bays, it makes no sense at all to drive in forwards.

Its fairly obvious that Calderdale council only recycle enough to meet government targets. Its taken this long for them to start collecting cans. As for the vast selection of recycling bags and boxes we have to look forward to next year, then they should look at South Holland Council in Lincolnshire. All recycling goes into one bag or bags or even just done up in anything other than a black bag. Nothing is left to blow away/be stolen after the collection as the bags are taken as well. This includes all plastic, paper, cardboard of any thickness, tins, glass, the lot. They have a very slick collection and sorting process.

p.s. whilst I commend anyone willing to make the journey to the recycling centre with plastic etc., how much needs to be taken to make the journey carbon neutral?

I started recycling about a year ago once I realised the amount of rubbish I was sending to landfill. If recycling were made easier I am sure more people would participate. I know there are only certain things that can be collected from your doorstep but I have to say that the majority of my recycling is plastic bottles which are not collected so I have no choice but to make the car journey to recycle them. I also have to agree that it is very frustrating when we get to the recycling point and there is no room for the things we have spent 3-4 weeks collecting! The system needs to be improved as things like this only discourage people in the long-run.

Recycling is unbelievable easy in Spain. There are receptacles for glass and cardboard and another which takes any metal, any plastic and briks(any of a multitude of plastic coated containers which things like milk and sugar comes in). These containers are placed together in many places around the town centre so you just drop them in as you pass when you go into town. If you have anything else to get rid of, you go to the nearest recycling point (one in every town) and there are skips for electrical goods, rubble, plastic, cardboard, glass and general refuse. Since moving here, the amount we recycle has increased dramatically and we are now in the position of throwing away only one CARRIER BAG full of rubbish in the bin per week.

Well I mean.

Here in The Middle Kingdom, the concept of rubbish is alien. Everything has a value, all plastic, paper, metal, wood, it is not allowed to hit the ground before someone has picked it up and added it to their collection. Many people scratch a living from savaging anything that has been discarded.

Nothing from the house is thrown away, it is sold to the local rag-and-bone man. He is around once or more each week. Of course any food scraps that are discarded are soon recycled by the local tramps. The only thing no one picks up is all the spit.

Edwin Turner,
Calderdale, curse their wonky spendthrift thinking, have already been made aware that I will not accept a Wheelie Bin or any receptacle that they bring to my property, other than a Dustbin.
I now await a diktat that our resident dictators may make such acceptance compulsory, by simply refusing entry to Tips and recycling facilities for domestic rubbish carriers on their opt out lists?
Such is life in Glorious Calderdale an award winning authority - it's obvious what the award was for I think, and it is not complimentary.

If I had a big enough garden to accomodate several recycling bins I would do my part, unfortunately I dont but I suppose this doesnt excuse me from recycling.

The only thing I disagree with is that you have to wash the empties such as tins, bottles etc. I feel this is a waste of time as these will be melted down anyway and by washing all these containers out I'm using more water than I need to, increasing my water bill and creating more and more waste water that needs to be treated.

To me, Water is more valuable than some cleans tins and bottles.

This is my personal opionion
