CARL Standeven ("Why are Europhiles so afraid of referenda?", Your say, July 19) is right to be concerned that the Irish will be bullied into a "yes" vote in a second referendum on the Lisbon treaty.

The French president, Nicholas Sarkozy has said: "The Irish will have to vote again in a second referendum."

His statement must be taken seriously as France holds the EU presidency for the next six months.

As someone who voted "yes" in the 1975 refer- endum on whether the UK should stay in the then Common Market, I'm in favour of trade and close links with Europe.

But, like the majority of other Europeans when they've been consulted in referendums and opinion polls, I am opposed to the undemocratic, corrupt, costly, EU human rights and bureacratic, meddling directives of the EU federal state the once Common Market has become.

What is it the Euro-philes don't understnad about the two-letter word "no"?

Paul Campbell

It's also worth remembering that the EU has an obligation to trade with non-EU Eurpoean states. So even if we pulled out of the EU entirely we would not necessarily sever our trade links with the Union.
