I READ John English's letter about 24 hour drinking being a big failure (Your say, July 11) but I, for one, do not agree.

I think a lot of people like to go for a drink between 2pm and 5pm, then home for tea.

Before 24-hour opening people drank to the clock on Sun-days, between 12 and 2pm the men used to get as much down as possible in the two hours, then home to dinner and bed until opening time at 7pm.

Now we can choose the time we go out. Don't forget, people can only drink what they have in their pocket and at £2.50 a pint we can't go out every day.

I say keep 24-hour opening.

John Cunningham

Thats fine as long as it does not have a negative impact on the rest of society particularly the families you have to go back to when you go home drunk - for such polices to be successful we need to learn personal responsibility with regard to drink. Unfortunately the law is as it is and groups such as the methodists and other Christian groups came into existence because of the social problems created by alcohol. This is one area where the nanny state has a point as the historical record going back not hundreds but thousands of years documents the problems caused by people not knowing when to stop drinking!
