THE headlines in the Courier continue to illustrate the danger our society has come to be in which young thugs can beat up a disabled person and abandon them when there is no money to be had. It is sad, but understandable that no one stopped to help.
In an effort to accommodate the lowest common denominator, we have stopped teaching that there is a difference between right and wrong.

It is a fact that in every faith community there is this teaching of the difference between right and wrong and is due to the existence of what C. S. Lewis called the Tao.

In this country, we have made a great mistake by abandoning, generally, the teachings of Jesus in our state schools. In these teachings are the feelings and respect we should have for others and the hurt we cause others by our senseless and selfish acts.

Religion causes most wars and so it shouldn't be taught in schools.

Teach respect by inflicting pain on those who disrespect others.

Come on Barney, it's an oft-repeated, but ultimately untrue cliche that religion causes most wars. In this day and age most wars are fought for political ideologies or along racial lines.

That said, It's really a nonsense to suggest that a multi-religious society can co-exist in peace and harmony though. How can it when both sides think theirs is the ONLY right answer?

I do agree with re-introducing corporal punishment though. Some people forget that respect comes from a healthy fear. Let's face it -the current attempt to gain respect by cosseting people and blaming everyone else for their misdemeanours hasn't really worked, has it?

Respect is an interesting concept and it is impossible to inflict it upon a people. Labour have been trying with their insidious social engineering schemes for years and they always fail. You can teach a people what is respectable but you cannot force them to hold respect for a person or position.

Respect can only be earned and that means the people who hold positions of authority must work much harder than they do. Police officer and council workers are rightly seen as useless jobsworths who are only interested in their own personal financial gain. They do not deserve any respect from anyone for they have not earned it.

How can anyone have a modicum of respect for a traffic warden who waits beside the car of a single mother whom he can see is struggling with pram, child and shopping as she approaches. The ticket is already written then as soon as the clock strikes the right time the ticket hit the windscreen and off walks the warden going in search of the next victim.

How can anyone have any respect for the police whom we see harassing the local youths for committing the very serious crime of making too much noise while they play in the local park but a always far to busy to attend a 999 call when you really need them.

How can we have any respect for police officers who break the law on a daily basis whist parking on double yellow lines as they attend the fish and chip shop.

How can we have any respect for the council workers who are so useless that they couldn't be bothered to remove a pair of underpants proudly flying over Brighouse town hall on remembrance Sunday?

Then we have the people who we can respect, the paramedics who always do their best, the firemen and women who will never give up, the charity workers who offer their services for no reward other than the satisfaction they get from the knowledge they are doing something good.

Jesus, God, Allah, Muhammed and any others are just made up images of a person or thing that has had chinese whispers since being created/born/invented.

Get a grip on life, people are people cos that is how/what we are, some are evil, some are kind, some are polite some are iggnorant.

Even the laws in place wont stop people being people so teh best solution is to kick the living daylight out of those who hurt others, that is the only way people will change, those that beat up that disabled person should themselves be beaten up, an eye for an eye.

If you knew that you would get the same treatment as you gave out, wouldnt you think twice about doing it?

I think I'll go over and kick that bloke in the nuts for the fun of it, hang about, if I do that, the same will happen to me, do I really want that to happen to me?
