I felt I had to write to support S Wright's letter in the Courier (January 27) regarding litter on our streets.

Bottles, cans, takeaway containers and the rest, not to mention the large amount of dog dirt littering the pavements.

Why aren't more fined for these offences? We should be proud of our environment, not abuse it in this way.

Hard to catch the litterbugs, S Field, unless we have litterbug police on every street corner.

#1 thats nonsense as some areas are full of rubbishall year round.
Also if a story appeared on this website about someone being fined for littering you would get the same comments about the council using it to make money and haven't they got better things to do etc... Exactly the same response when selfish people who get fined for parking offence and then start crying about it.

#1...any residue left on our street due to excess refuse collections after the snow was deftly swept up by residents.

It's called pride in your surroundings ands respect for your neighbours.

#4 the dog dirt isn't always caused by neighbours (or should I say their dogs) - we live on a lane leading to a wood where people take their dogs to do their business and the lane is full of dog mess.

Some people just don't care. My son has pockets full of rubbish that he doesn't throw away until he gets home, it all depends on how you were brought up.

#5...agree....dog muck is a more disgusting problem than litter....a few dogs in our street but fortunately they have responsible owners.

if cans and bottles are laid in the road, it means the recyclers were around yesterday, try following 1 of their wagons for 5 minutes and see how much they drop, and leave.
