People should have more respect for this nice town we're living in

WHY is litter such a problem in Halifax? At Halifax station last week, I was appalled to see the state of the place. Rubbish all over the floor, bottles thrown willy-nilly down on the ground.
People shout about neglect: why do people always blame the station when they do it themselves? It is not so much Halifax station as Halifax people, passengers going in and out of the station who just do not care.
When I was a child the golden rule was, if there are no litter bins take your litter home. A message that nobody has any time for nowadays.
There are litter bins, but no one uses them. They just throw every can, every sandwich paper, on the station floor and walk away without even a glance.
One supposes that these are the same people who scream about the place being an eyesore and a disgrace. Put 100 bins around and no one will use them. In other places abroad, there are fines for this total disregard for public property.
Halifax bus stops are another place where rubbish is ankle-deep despite bins being two paces away. On the pavement there are millions of paper cups and other things much worse. No one has respect for this very nice looking town we live in.
It is disgraceful for visitors to arrive and see this, but is the fault of the people of Halifax.
