THERE cannot be too many people in Calderdale who have ever heard of Potters Bar, let alone referred to it in the Courier.

I have long been an admirer of your columnist William Marshall, especially since he wrote his amusing piece about a year ago on the futility of everyone having an ID card, but he surprised me further by making reference to Potters Bar in his article on Yorkshire Day (Courier, September 30).

My mother lived in Potters Bar for about 20 years and my own home is situated about six miles from it. The train from Leeds to King's Cross passes through it.

I will not say any more about the location as I do not want to spoil its sleepy anonymity.

All this makes me think that Mr Marshall is really a Southerner.

Peter Holmes
