Wakefield Road,
Sowerby Bridge.
IT'S all black and white in Eddie Pollard's world ("Lock up hooligans who carry knives", Your say, July 17).

Like most of the lynch-mob mentality he p
roudly claims to belong to, there are only certainties, no grey areas.

Does he really believe people could be banned from wearing hoods? And is he ready to bel-ieve that prison is really a deter- rent to some young people, some of whom will already have been through youth custody?

What Mr Pollard doesn't grasp is the chilling fact that prison, the police or the court system do not deter some of these thugs in the slightest.

There are many questions to be asked concerning youth crime. Why does parental responsibility seem alien to some families? Why does violence seem to be the only solution to problems?

Perhaps most importantly, why do we demonise young people so much? Why do I hate and fear gangs of youths when I am forced to walk past them?

The answers seem very far from being simple and clear cut

Richard Greenwood

Well said ryburn.

It's common sense, but oft-ignored, that the re-offend rates for people WHILE IN PRISON is nil. No 'Community Punishment Order' can boast such a success rate i'm sure. Some folk seem to forget that the purpose of prison is three-fold: first, as a punishment by denying the offender their freedom; secondly (and arguably most importantly), to keep them off the streets and away from the law-abiding public; thirdly, to facilitate their rehabilitation. Sadly, the more liberal-minded forget points 1& 2, choosing only to focus on 3.

Herr Pollard's 'Black and white' theory seems a much more common-sense approach to the current 'ten shades of grey' thinking.
