I WAS very pleased to read that our council got it right over free swimming (Courier, September 22) for the under 16s and over 60s.

It's just a pity that it might only be for the next two years, according to Coun Amanda Byrne's statement on the cost issue. It's also sad when it takes our Government the 2012 Olympic games to come up with the thought. I think it's also a pity that the powers that be can't make it a permanent thing for what it would cost, or for what it might lose on the council's side.

Just think what all this could achieve in the long run to both old and young alike.
