School proms are extravagance

What is this phenomenon of "school proms" ("Proms special", Courier, July 16)?

I look at the photos and see ostentation, oneupmanship, lack of social conscience, drain on parents' finances and total obscenity in these times of global famine.

Remember Band Aid? What about The Cars' "Who's gonna drive you home tonight". I am sure helicopters, double-decker buses and stretch limos were not on the agenda!

Is this condoned by their teachers?

What do the young adults think who are at this moment setting out overseas on voluntary service in the Third World, as they see this extravagance by their peers when they have been frugally saving to "make a difference".

Surely there is another path to follow. A simple celebration without expense for all, regardless of circumstances.

Am I a fuddy-duddy, a Victor Meldrew? Is it me?

(Mrs) Angela Sutcliffe

Is this woman a WUM?

She really feels that strongly about people leaving school having a celebration to mark it, and do dress up nicely?

I would hate to know Angela Sutcliffe. Must bring people down.

Obviously she was never asked to dance at the school disco!!
Live and let live. These kids were enjoying themselves and there's been nothing reported that there has been any trouble at one of these proms.

I don't think i quite agree with the writer's reasons, but i do think these American-styled proms are a bit OTT. Nowt wrong wi' a dance at t'civic hall an a bag o'chips on't way 'ome.

Grand.

I remember leaving school, not knowing if i'd see friends again. It would have been nice to have had a prom, and say good by to people i had grown up with.

I bet these kids in their suits and dresses feel really grown up, and that having a prom to mark leaving school is a step towards adulthood.

I know that in Scotland they have been having school leavers proms for at least 30 years, maybe we are just catching up with our neighbours north of the border.
