The Orchards,
Rastrick.

NO doubt there will be many mixed feelings about the announcement by the Secretary of State for Local Government about the Sugden's site in Brighouse ("The £1m blow for Brighouse", Courier, January 19)
I, for one, am extremely excited about the news. This decision is not only fantastic news for Brighouse but absolutely the right news for Brighouse.
I say this on two counts. First, some of us have thought for a very long time that the Sugden's scheme, which has been on the table for over 10 years, is wrong for Brighouse.
This means that we can now have a serious debate about what is best for that site and, whoever the final developer is, the people of the area can insist on the right development.
This will genuinely catapult the long-awaited regeneration of the greater Brighouse town centre.
Second, and more important, this now clears the way for Brighouse to have a new swimming pool.
As a member of Calderdale Council's Conserv-ative cabinet, I can assure you that we are as one about the urgency and importance of getting a swimming pool for Brighouse and very soon.
The Secretary of State's announcement means that the council can get on and provide Brighouse with a pool. I can assure you that announcements on the pool's progress will come very soon.
The news, I feel, is fantastic for Brighouse.
Craig Whittaker
(Con, Rastrick)
