I READ your reader's letter headlined "Why must I wait for free TV licence?" (Your say, July 8) and would like to make clear that the rules for the TV licence fee and any concessions are laid down in Government regulations.

The Government has set the qualifying age as 75 and, as such, any decision on a change in eligibility would be a matter for the Government.

However, those who are aged 74 and need to renew their licence can apply for a short-term licence that will cover them until their 75th birthday, when they will be eligible to apply for a free TV licence.

Anyone wishing to find out more, or to apply for the free over-75 licence should visit www.tvlicensing.co.uk or call 0844 800 6732.
