THE Courier, on November 1, contained very depressing news. I was appalled to read that the thugs who attacked Mrs White were allowed to walk free - click here to read the story.

She had gone to investigate an argument her father was having with a group of young people and her actions resulted in her receiving hospital treatment.

No doubt a custodial sentence was not imposed because of Government instructions, because our jails are full.

Also, a youth who had been arrested at Tesco's for having an airgun was given a reprimand. Don't the police know that modern air guns are capable of blinding people or, at worst, killing people?

The majority of people will agree with Mrs White when she says "punishment is a joke".

People can't be bothered to report criminal activities because, they either receive a number for insurance purposes, or if people are prosecuted, they receive a slap on the wrist.

Your Courier Comment was quite correct. Law-abiding people believe that the punishment should fit the crime. It is about time the people who are paid to protect us, imposed punishments we would all agree with.

I agree with Mrs White that "punishment is a joke". If the jails are full and youths know that they will get away with such crimes then bring back the 'stocks' leave them out all night, and if that does not work then bring back the 'old corporal punishment'. It would be cheaper and more effective I think.

Perhaps there were mitigating circumstances. Perhaps Mrs White is sometimes as abusive and offensive to others who live in the area?

We also need to ask why so many youths are growing up making the calculation that crime and violence pays as well as punishing criminal activity. As a society we are producing people who see crime and violence as the only means they have to survive. It is fine to punish but there has to be a contract of duties and responsibilities both on the part of society and the individual that have to be understood by both parties. As a society we cannot make demands on people we give nothing to in return for those demands. As a society we have become good at hating and not so good at building communities and people feeling part of a community and the resulting responsibilities and duties which was the best control method in preventing this type of behaviour

The police do not help themselves. On Remembrance Sunday afternoon, my husband and I were crossing Commercial Street when he was run over by a car deliberately driving at him, and thrown over the bonnet. The driver then drove at me, laughing, and sped off up George Street. We have since found that the crime has been classified as a commom assault!! Even if the police do manage to apprehend the driver, this charge will result in a paltry fine. This was a hit-and-run, if not attempted murder.
