IN 1947 aged 14 I entered the workforce.

I still remember older workers saying to me: "Nay lad, if I were thee I'd emigrate. This country's finished."

In June 1978 I returned home after eight years in Australia.

I remember a lady saying: "Why on earth did you come back here? This country's finished."

Well, the old girl is taking a bit of finishing off, eh?

I've heard this childish and very predictable remark hundreds of times, always from the same type of moron, the famed "Whingeing Pom".

We've all had 'em – at work, down the pub, on the train and bus, as a neighbour. Isn't it time we shut them up?

Their miserable, pessimistic, negative cynical attitudes are bad for the health. Mostly theirs, but they infect the rest of us too,.

It's a proven fact that these attitudes can cause bad health, eventually death.

Are they worth your time? Give 'em the big brush-off.

Let them whine to themselves. They deserve each other.

And the rest of us, live, love and laugh. They are all good for your health!

Eric Firth

I lived in Australia for two years when I was a boy in the 1970's and was subject to the Whingeing Pom jibe. However I have remained true to my roots and carried on Whinging and had a jolly good time doing so. Eric you lived to long in Australia so have forgotten what it means to be British and the self critical way of life that we revel in. In my experience an Australian is a laugh a minute until he is on the losing side especially if we Whingeing Poms get one up on them, believe me they dish it out to us but cannot take it from us!!

I live in Australia and I have nothing to whinge about. Aussies only whinge when they lose at sport but even then they get over it (mostly). There are lots of English tourists here and they complain like hell a lot of the time and give us all a bad name. They are both great countries, just for different reasons.

re aussiefax comments on whinging . i live on the gold coast in queensland i can assure you the english tourests never whinge they love it here.. but we who live here suffer constant moaning from the aussies .we cant not SAY anything without it being classed as whinging and believe me when the aussies lose against any other country they usually of accept it, but let them lose against the english.!!and exististing discrimination become even worse..You may ask??".why do we stay here" !! the one and only answer," we have our grandchildren here.."
