ON BBC1 at 9pm on August 14 there was a programme called Traffic Cops. One statement on the programme was "More children die on British roads, than any other age group".

Last week on Manor Drive, Halifax, I saw 10 young children – average age about six years – playing on and off the paths and dodging in and out behind cars.

They appeared to be in the care of another small child, aged about 11, who was shouting at them and telling them what to do.

Why? Where are the parents of these little ones? Why move to this area with two lovely parks within easy walking distance if you want your children to play on the road?

I observed the same thing today. Manor Drive is used as a rat run by the idiot end of the motoring fraternity. One day there will be a tragic accident and who will be to blame? The negligent parent or the speeding motorist?

P Porteous

too many parents let their children out unsupervised on busy roads I agree ,in sowerby bridge the kida have skate boards as well as bikes and use the gradients to speed down in front of drivers who havent an earthly chance of avoiding them , except to go as slow as walking pace then the children turn and laugh at them frustrating oh yes but it would be the drive who was vilified if anything happened to the darling children..

"Used as a rat run by the idiot end of the motoring fraternity".

Strange, I though Manor Drive was a public road, paid for by the general motorist through the myriad of taxes heaped upon them, not the private preserve of a particular individual, although the writer will be pleased to hear that I have been able to forego the `pleasure` of using this stretch of carriage way for at least a decade.

Obviously P. Porteous cannot be a motorist as he/she doesn`t drive past anyone elses property at any time, as that would surely make them a hypocrite wouldn`t it?

Whose fault would an accident be? The driver, 100% of the time, even if the car was stationary, legally parked with no occupants. Has to be, the little dears can`t do anything wrong, and anyway, how can you use a phrase like "negligent parent" and get away with it? Surely you mean "member of a family unit which has been let down by the state support structure"?
