Why are Europhiles so afraid of referenda?
Rochdale Road,
Ripponden.
WE have yet another letter from naive Eric Firth telling us how wonderful the EU is.
His latest ("Euro votes are a farce and waste of money", Your say, July 14) criticises the Irish referendum on the Lisbon Treaty because only just over one quarter of the electorate voted against.
Funny thing is, double-standards Eric is happy to accept that percentage of votes for his favoured MEPs.
If the EU is as wonderful as Europhiles like Eric Firth say it is, why are they so afraid of referendums?
However, don't fret too much, Eric, because if past form is anything to go on the Irish will soon be bullied into voting in favour in a second referendum.
Then no fear of a further referendum because the Europhiles will have got what they wanted and you'll be able to write to Your say singing the praises of referendums.
