Why is it that a man of 51 years who is partially paralysed by a stroke and unable to defend himself when attacked in the street, receives no help from those people passing by in their cars?

Click here to read last week's story of the attack.

What is it about today's society that allows these things to happen without intervention?

We are not talking of getting into a full-scale fight but merely making an attempt to defend one who plainly cannot defend himself, I hope that those who drove past this incident feel justly proud of themselves for they can be counted among the real heroes in our society.

I can appreciate that weapons could be involved but to see an innocent man or woman attacked and do nothing shows a complete disregard for those less able to stand up to those that would attack.

As for the individuals who took part in this attack, these are not people with feelings or morals, these are lowest form of life on this planet with the sole aim of inflicting as much suffering as possible to satisfy their twisted minds – minds, which I might add have not a decent shred of knowledge or humanity held within them, in fact they are a complete waste time to society as a whole.

These individuals when caught (if caught!) should face the harshest penalty that society can pass on them.

Perhaps now is the time when we as a society should think about turning the clock back to a time when those caught after taking part in a crime faced a punishment more suited to the crime committed, but alas I feel it will be a long time in coming.

In the meantime, society begins to slowly self destroy and the weak, the old, and the less able pay the price.

I agree that punishment rarely fits the crime and, to some extent, this is why crime is on the increase.

I would like to make two points. Firstly, that had I been driving past and seen this incident, I definitely would have stopped to assist the victim. Thoughts to the stupidity of that and the potential risk to myself would have come after the event. Secondly though, therein lies the point. 'Had I been driving past and seen the incident'. It is quite possible, depending upon just where abouts on the pavement, angle to the road, conditions on the road, etc etc, that the many cars who did drive on, simply did not see the incident. Drivers attention, quite rightly, is focussed on the road ahead, around and immediately behind. We must not assume all drivers continuing on their jounrney without assisting did so out of malice, heartlessness or cowardice. It is possible that in the seconds- or milliseconds of passing that they simply did not see the event.

The silence from Ian Levitt of Calderdale Police is deafening, why cannot he look at the CCTV from the shops adjacent to the Chemists ? or is he waiting for another attack on the defenceless in Ovenden, before they get off their butts and do some real police work ?
So much for his Community Policing policy!!!!

people dont help, or turn away these days because of the likleyhood of being arrested & sued.dont blame people who at one time would have intervened, the blame lies squarely with solicitors-lawyers-do gooders

I agree with Lynne, and would like to think I would have stopped and done something to help this poor man. However, Python makes an all too valid point, that anyone who had intervened risked the full force of the Law being used against them - which is very sad really....

What a mess our country is in!
