A BAND that is more than 150 years old plans to raise up to £300,000 for a new home.
Elland Silver Band's base in Dewsbury Road, Elland, was built during the Second World War as a temporary nursery but now – more than 60 years later – it is old and tired.

Despite this, the 80 members of Elland Silver Senior Band, Elland Silver Youth Band and Elland Silver Training Band, who range in age from seven to mid-70s, still use it every week.

But it is suffering from concrete decay, has no proper heating, no hot water, is very damp and gets extremely cold during winter.

Secretary Kathleen Harrison said: "The state of the building is causing us great concern.

"The band has a long history and over the years has produced some very fine musicians and continues to do so today. We need to keep that tradition going."

They hope to demolish the bandroom and replace it with an eco-friendly base on the same site. Working parties have been set up to deal with issues such as building constraints and planning, grant applications and funding.

The band has signed up to The Giving Machine, a website that gives cash to schools and charities when people visit online shops via its site.

It is also performing at An Evening of Remembrance at Halifax Parish Church on Saturday at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £10 and all proceeds will go to the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal, the church and the band.

For information, tickets or to make a help contact Kathleen Harrison on 01484 717126.
