RESIDENTS in Greetland fear a proposed viaduct pathway will encourage more anti-social behaviour in the area.
They told council highways engineer Richard Binks they were worried a path running along West Vale viaduct would "increase the youth nuisance, anti-social behaviour and damage".

Mr Binks said the path would encourage people to walk or cycle instead of getting in the car.

He said: "I can't believe that his is the only community in the entire country that doesn't want this scheme."

Residents raised concerns over safety, anti-social behaviour and maintenance of the site at a public meeting in St Patrick's Catholic Primary School, Hullen Edge Road, West Vale.

Craig Bottomley, of Bankfield Grange, said: "I have been a Greetland resident for 39 years and there is no way in this world I would let my children walk near that viaduct.

"I have had a car damaged because of people throwing things from it."

Helen Woodworth, of Bankfield Grange, said: "Anyone that lets their children go there is foolish."

Graham Bateman, owner of Bateman Fabrications, said stones were regularly thrown through his window from the viaduct.

If approved the path will form part of a two-phase project, which includes a cycle network throughout Calderdale.Cyclists have welcomed the scheme.

Colin Gabbitas, from Greetland, said: "There are so many dangers on the roads and this is one way of going around them."

Richard Carney, of Saddleworth Road, said: "I think this is absolutely fantastic. This is brilliant and will bring something special to the area.

"We should do something to get rid of the problems."

Original plans for the grade II-listed viaduct were refused earlier in the year after concerns a new path would affect wildlife.

I totally agree that this cycle path should not be opened. I live just below the viaduct and on numerous occasions children throw objects into my yard - luckily nothing has been damaged yet!!! Hopefully my fireworks tonight will hit them on the way up

Two,linked, things here - perspective and vision. The report makes it sound virtually everyone is against this plan. There were in fact just seven objections when it last came before the planning committee, that's seven out of what we are told is a community of 10,000.
Not that this dilutes the objections - work must be done to address concerns. We cannot let the fear of 'anti-social behaviour' win. We might as well pull down the shutters and run up the white flag. The vast, decent, law-abiding majority must make the good things in life work - and this scheme is a good thing. It will get more kids walking to school, encourage exercise, get some cars off the road. These are all wonderful, achievable aims. We can't let the fear of a few anti-social idiots knock it off course.
Let's all work together to make this happen for the greater good of the greater number. Let's make concessions to get everyone on board. All arguments are valid - except the not-in-my-backyard one.
For this scheme possesses great vision for a healthy. environmentally-friendly future for everyone.
We've heard the concerns but let's not forget the massive benefits this would bring. Everyone should embrace it and make their support known.

Bitsy and I will certainly climb aboard our tandem and spend our retirement cycling along the viaduct - it will be great fun once all cycle paths and viaducts are opened. As long as no-one puts a bench or a shed there the lovely residents of Bankfield Grange should be free from abuse of young people in the area. I seem to remember having problems with bridle paths being closed when I was younger as people were converting barns and closing off the paths, without permission - many a time I inadvertently trotted in to someone's washing or had to gallop and jump over their swimming pool.
