TAXPAYERS face an ever-increasing bill for maintaining the Shay stadium.
It can now be revealed Calderdale Council spent £5.239 million on ground improvements including the opening of the new East Stand this year.

And there was an additional overspend of £359,000 which falls on taxpapers, and a further six-figure sum h
as to be found to bring the ground up to scratch.

The North Stand is currently closed to fans on health and safety grounds because of concerns about its concrete structure.

Drainage needs improving to ease flooding on the pitch and general maintenance including guttering, safety fencing, and painting are among issues to be tackled. And not all the interior space in the East Stand is up to scratch.

"Playing for Success" which works with youngsters has to use a bar area as its planned space has never been fitted out.

Stadium manager Russell Moore said a whole raft of refurbishment could go-ahead if the money was available but there was nothing in the pipeline.

The scale of the problem was revealed to councillors recently on the newly formed capital working group which the new council administration set-up to share information across the board.

There are problems with concrete steps in the North Stand and a decision was taken in March to close that section of the ground off to fans. Because the stadium capacity is far bigger than the attendances generated by the football and rugby clubs, it was rarely used anyway.
Gutters on the West Stand need replacing and those on the North and South Stands are also showing their age.

Environment and economy spokesman Barry Collins said the extra costs fall on the council.

"This is the financial situation left by the previous administration," he said.

"The Shay project should have been monitored on a more regular basis."
With the council having other spending priorities, Coun Collins said it was not known when extra funds would be available for the Shay.

The issue is expected to be raised at tonight's council meeting.

i totally agree with you

stop wasting taxpayers money on something for a minority - we need our roads repaired, we need our old folkes homes and schools to be maintained; we need lots of things that council tax payers need BEFORE spending money on a stadium that a minority of the local taxpayers use.

If the football/rugby teams cannot support their facilities then it should be closed just like any other factory or business - if it was wanted that much then there would be enough income from the clubs & supporters to fund the SHAY

STOP WASTING COUNCIL MONEY ON THE FOOBAL/RUGBY GROUND, let those who use it support it

Ticked OFF, - GET A GRIP.

Of course it is the Councils responsibility, Its their statium, therfore up to them to fix it, If you own a house and rent it out, the roof gets damaged, you dont expect the tennants to pay !!! The amount of money they charge the rugby club and football club is huge, The football are currently trying to renegotiate their price, and who can blame them when you find out things are not adequote.

The Shay is in a right state. All the perimeter fencing needs replacing along Huddersfield Road and the bus garage, the North Stand is dropping to bits after shoddy workmanship as well as having woefully inadequate toilet provision, the Skircoat Stand is a folorn white elephant and the corner of the East and South Stand seems destined to stay as an incomplete rusting skeleton. Very sad, especially when you see Chesterfield's super new stadium and the Galpharm just down the road.

The council spent money on it but did not get the job done right in the first place, If the council did things right in the first place then things would be done on time, to budget and to the standards that they set out to achieve. NOT BODGED JOBS to contracters.

How about the running track, granted they had some lottery funding, but the council also funded this, how does this pay for itself or anyone get anything out of this, they dont except the harriers, We need these things in our town otherwise there would be nothing but pubs and pound shops, that maybe what you like, who knows.

I know the council own the stadium.
I never agreed with them bailing it out in the first place.
The councils ownership is fundamentaly wrong. Roads, waste collection, schools and the general infrastructure is the councils responsibility.
At the end of the day, my money is being used to subsidise sports that less than .5% of the population of Calderdale want to go along and pay to watch!! If, like 99% of all other football and rugby clubs in this country was owned by the minority who use it, they would be bankrupt!
Where do we stop pouring public (MY!) money into private enterprise?
If the rugby and football club cant afford to pay the 'huge rent', then they should go out of business just like any other.

Eventually even a council with seemingly limitless resources (provided by the council tax payer) must realise it is throwing good money after bad at a provision which is for a very limited number of the electorate.

Time to cut your losses and flog it to the highest bidder.
If you can sell Broad Street for considerably less than market value then you can surely dispose of this Albatross.

It's about time someone examined the books!
If all of that quoted figure is for the work so far done, then somebody should resign, or there should be an investigation.- into the whole process.
Who is adding what, and for what purpose?
