THE crumbling remains of a 19th-century terrace, valued at less than £30,000, has been sold at auction – for £76,000.
Calderdale Council will put the proceeds from Wainhouse Terrace, Halifax, towards the £350,000 needed for repairing nearby Wainhouse Tower.

The back-to-back houses built in the late 1800s by Edward Wainhouse were pulled down by the council in 1978.

All that remains is the basements and a 200ft ornate terrace with panoramic views of the Calder Valley.

But the Gothic-style listed structure cannot be dramatically altered and there is no vehicular access.

Under the terms of the sale, the new owner has three years to carry out still more repairs or the council will buy back the property.

aye,- I also spent many hour running around tatie tower, and probably annoying the folk that were living there at the time. It says only the basements remain, but if I remember rightly, the row just below the balustrade on the picture is actually the front doors of the houses on the lower level, - those built on top being demolished.

Oooh, I had no idea that there used to be houses on the Terrace, being born in 1979. I always wondered what the point of it was.

Does the council buy it back at £30,000, the £76,000 paid for it, or the market value in three years' time? We should be told!
