A DRUG addict attacked his own mother on the same day the Courier reported him being snared in a police sting.
Andrew Paul Young, 28, of Wakefield Road, Sowerby Bridge, hurled objects at his 52-year-old disabled mother during an argument after she heard how he stole from a booby-trapped "Capture Car".
Heroin addict Young, was captured by security cameras b
reaking into the Renault Clio at the Lidl car park, Sowerby Bridge, and sprayed by smart water canisters as he tried to prise its sat nav out.
He even went home, changed into dry clothes, and returned to the car 15 minutes later with a pair of scissors to finish the job, but was arrested later at home where police found his stained clothes.
Calderdale magistrates heard when his mum Pauline King found out about the crime from the Courier, the two had a furious row.
Andy Wills, prosecuting, said: "Young had gone to her house for something to eat and to talk about his drug habit, but an argument ensued.
"He hit her three times on the head with the back of his hand, threw a plastic writing board at her which missed and threw a diary as well."
Young, whose mum was in court to stand-by her son, denied ever hitting her but admitted throwing the book.
Mark Baxendale, for Young, said: "He is fully ashamed of losing his temper infront of her, she is not a well lady.
"By nature he is a fairly gentle individual – the type of person who offers his house to other waifs and strays in Halifax with drug problems and is often taken advantage of.
"He cannot stand this lifestyle any more and wants rid of it."
Young pleaded guilty to theft and assault and was given a 12-month community order with a supervision and drug rehabilitation requirement and ordered to pay £120 prosecution costs.
