AN AMATEUR dramatic stalwart is to receive a prestigious award.
Lois Swales, of Norton Drive, Norton Tower, Halifax, is this year's recipient of the Harold Brooksby Memorial Award.

Mrs Swales has been a member of Halifax Light Opera Society for more than 30 years and works closely with the Halifax Light Opera Society Juniors.

She was nominated by society chairman George Mitchell for her commitment to the group.

He said: "She has, through her commitment helped to give hundreds of young people the opportunity to develop self-esteem and confidence which will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives,"

Mrs Swales will be presented with the Harold Brooksby Memorial Trophy by the Mayor of Calderdale at Halifax Town Hall on June 25.

She will be the 45th person to receive the prize which is named after Harold Brooksby, a helper at Ovenden Youth Club. He died in May 1962 after an industrial accident at his workplace.

Trustees of the award have asked for nominations for the 2009 recognition to be sent to 20 Lynton Grove, Bradshaw, Halifax. HX2 9XN.
