Anger on the estate plagued by dog dirt

RESIDENTS are up in arms over "irresponsible" dog owners who are letting their pets foul a Calderdale estate.
The problem plaguing Beechwood Estate, Sowerby, is said to be at its worst for 30 years and residents have started a campaign to get people to clean up their dogs' mess.
Dot Lacey, who has lived on the estate for 30 years, said: "It is all over our footpaths, grass and play areas. It is getting ridiculous – the worst I've ever seen it.
"The other day I walked from my house in Fore Lane Avenue and along just eight blocks of houses I counted 33 piles of dog dirt.
"I'm a dog owner myself but people need to start taking some pride in the estate and be more responsible."
As well as anger about the mess, there are fears over the health risks from dog dirt.
Youngsters particularly are at risk from diseases such as
toxocariasis, which is carried by worms and causes blindness.
Trevor Sykes, chairman of Beechwood Tenants and Residents' Association, who regularly protests against the mess, is now spearheading the campaign with Pennine Housing 2000 to stop the problem.
"It is very bad around here at the moment", he said. "The dogs are going everywhere, including play areas which is a real concern to us.
"We have got undercover dog patrols in place and will be distributing leaflets as well. It's got to the point where someone needs a serious fine to sort this out."
Amanda Garrard, chief executive of Pennine, said: "We want to make it safer for everyone up there and it is a shame that some of this hard work is being undone."
