NURSES having to switch hospitals say they are being left stranded with no way to get to work.
Staff at Calderdale Royal Hospital and Huddersfield Royal Infirmary are having to work six-month rotations at each hospital as part of an overhaul of services.

Nurses could take a free shuttle bus which runs the seven miles between the two sites.

But it does not run in time for their shifts.

One nurse, who did not want to be named, said some people would have to get three buses just to make sure they got to work on time.

"It's a long journey between Halifax and Huddersfield," she said. "People who live right out in Holmfirth are going to have to come to Halifax to come to work.

"People are really upset about it. Nobody is listening to us." Nurses were also unhappy at having to move hospitals. "We want to have a say about where we work. They're treating us like children."

The bus runs from Huddersfield Royal Infirmary at 7.30am – half an hour after staff on the morning shift starts.

And the last bus leaves Calderdale Royal Hospital at 8.30pm, but late shift nurses do not finish until 9pm.

Halifax MP Linda Riordan said she has been contacted by several nurses. She said there should be a free service in place.

From next month all trauma surgery will be based at Huddersfield and all elective surgery will be at Calderdale.

Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust organised the rotations so staff can keep their skills up to date.

Director of nursing Helen Thomson said there had been meetings with staff during the reorganisation and workers had ways of reporting concerns.

Typical government planning here with the bus times. the nurses and indeed all the staff should have been consulted about these busses especially when involving the backbone of the NHS - our highly valued nurses.

poor nurses, gettin it in the neck again, we should be looking after them better so they don´t all go abroad and leave us with non english speaking nurses!

I believe in moving forward and things changing BUT I worked as a nurse at the Halifax General Hospital and it was a great place to work. We had one sister in charge of each ward and when she (or the charge nurse) were away the senior staff nurse took charge. There were very few managers and there was no MRSA. As a student nurse many years ago each weekend when the wards were quiet we had to clean patients lockers, washbowls etc, etc. This was considered as part of our training. Now nurses have to get degrees etc, and from what I have heard good old bedside nursing and common sense has gone out the window. I am pleased that I do a different job now but have great memories of my nursing years. What a shame when nurses working early and late shift patterns have to go by bus to different hospitals. The NHS should be encouraging nurses back not sending them running. Sorry to harp on but I feel strongly about this. Lets turn back the clock and get back to what nursing is all about- knowing and caring for each individual patient and their individual needs.

Why do they have to spend 6mnths in Hx & 6 in Hudds, just because they have joined together!! Eg a nurse has worked in calderdale for 10years, then she is told she has to travel to Hudds, however she & her husband have 3 young children, they have a time line of half an hour when she comes in from the night shift before he leaves for work! How does she get from hudds to home in time! answer she does not! result disruption not only to their lives but also the extended family who have to rally round. the Trust should be listening to nursing staff not alienating them, its no wonder their is a nurse shortage with the conditions they have to face.

Well put MrsL you did not go on as you put it, but you told the truth about what is required lets hope that one of the managers who cream off huge amounts of money in wages takes notice of your wise words, once again well put.

this might sound like the nurses moaning agian, but when they do its for a reason, can you imagine joe bloggs getting his cup of tea late because the nurse hasnt reachwd work yet, be it huddersfield or calderdald er halifax, never mind the patient having a heart attack and no one there to see to him because the 730 nurse has been left at huddersfield..........
its time to seperate calderdale halifax and huddersfield

A disgraceful way to treat nursing staff. No doubt thought up by the bosses who drive round in their posh cars with all mileage paid.
