A BEER museum displaying interactive exhibitions of Halifax's historic brewing tradition could open in the Piece Hall.
The gallery would stretch across an entire lower side of the building and would be equipped with activities, such as a system where thirsty punters could brew their own ale, memorabilia and its own mini bar.

And it would include a micro-brewery where classic Halifax ales, including Ramsden and Whitaker, were reintroduced to the town.

Joining David Mennell, the former licensee behind the proposals, will be David Budgen, part owner of The Hobbit Inn, Norland, The Fountain Head, Pellon, and The George, King Cross.

Mr Mennell said: "The possibilities are endless."

If the museum was a success in its first six months, it is hoped a special "ale trail" could be set up giving guided tours across some of Calderdale's tourist hotspots via different pubs with each one encouraged to create a "museum room" recreating a period of history.

Mr Mennell said it was still in the early stages but things were progressing well.

Dawn Mitchell, Calderdale Council's Piece Hall manager, said an approach had been made, but discussions were ongoing.

Kopodonit,

In limbo 12/08/2008 09:29:55
This must be the most appalling suggestion I have read in quite some time. Daily we read on the pages of this newspaper of the trouble and strife caused within this town by the over consumption of the demon drink. There seems to few court cases reported where drink is not in one way or another part of the equation.

Now it is proposed to have a museum to glorify the demon drink, to run tours to help to promote the alcohol culture that is now predominant within society.

Society should be rid of this demon.

This sounds like a great idea! I am in full support, whilst at the same time, I do agree that binge drinking needs to be addressed, the people who drink real ale, are a million miles away from the people whoKopodonit is on about. They are the strong lager, alcopop and other strong spirit drinkers, who tend to cause all the problems.

I have not seen masses of violent drunks spilling out of places like the Three Pigeons or the Pumproom....

Horses for courses here please.

The reason there is so much binge drinking and so many problems in town due to drink is because prices have been hiked up so much by pub companies and the government that people are now drinking at home and then going out later into town. When prices were not so astronomical, people used to go to local pubs and these pubs controlled the idiots who could not handle their beer.

I think that this museum is a great idea. It brings back the idea of the local pub and as Chigley said real ale drinkers do not tend to be the type to go round causing havoc and starting fights (well, only when really pushed)

Sorry for waffling

Sounds a great idea - proper beer! Yesterday in my local I heard some youngsters discussing the ingredients of a "Cheeky Vimto" and a "Muddy Puddle"....made me feel ill just listening to them.

Anything associated with The George, King Cross gets my vote.

Always a good variety of beer, company and atmosphere.

See you in there on Sunday about 4
