WORK has at last begun on two projects vital to Halifax.
The £4.5 million scheme to complete the Shay stadium and the long-awaited Broad Street development are now under way.

When Owen Williams, Calderdale Council's new chief executive was appointed in January, he pledged there would be no more delays on the projects.

"I will be judged on what happens at the Shay, Broad Street and the Piece Hall," he said at the time.

Council leader Stephen Baines (Northowram and Shelf) said today: "We are making things happen, not just in Halifax but throughout Calderdale.

"Work is starting on the Broad Street development, contractors have been appointed for new swimming pools in Sowerby Bridge and Brighouse, libraries are being improved and plans are in the pipeline to rebuild Calderdale College."

Watching what's happened to the redevelopment of Bradford, this will be interesting to see what's going to happen in Halifax. In Bratford there was talk of major shops all moving in, but they've all pulled out.

Hope he doesn't come to regret this: "he pledged there would be no more delays on the projects."

"I will be judged on what happens at the Shay, Broad Street and the Piece Hall," he said at the time.

To be fair the guy got some stick when he said those comments as we all thought it was a load of rubbish. The guy maybe needs some credit for getting it going!

exile, what exactley will you miss about the old star? the fact that it's lying there in ruins and has done for god knows how many years, keep up with the times pal, better things are on the horrizon. I'm looking forward to having a cinema back in the town and new shops. not to mention the penthouse apprtment above it all that i'll probably buy.

Ok lets put it to a vote:

all those in favour for keeping the scraggy old pub say yay!

all those in favour of progress and a better town say hell yeah!

At long last we're going to have a completed Shay for the benefit of all the Community! But what a great pity that it wasn't done years ago, before the club had to go out of business, yet there was still a sound arguement for Community use! Owen Williams, Stevephen Baines "et al" may be full of Eastern promise for keeping theirs and moving things forward. However, I seem to remember what felt like millions of letters to the "Courier" from their electorate beseeching them to stop this stupid determination to build a Bowling Alley on the Broad Street site and put something there that the Community actually didn't already have, such as a skating rink. -The response? Well, the hoardings on the Broad Street site still clearly show that a Bowling Alley we'll get, like it or not. C'mon gentlemen and all the rest of the elected Council and start actually listening to those who elected you! Is it too much to ask that we actually get something different instead of something duplicated, when there is absolutely no need whatsoever and one of them must eventually go out of business as a result, with the loss of all the associated jobs? Please prove that you really do represent those who elected you!
