A BRASS band has been given a grant of nearly £4,000 to record a CD.
The Hebden Bridge Junior Brass Band plan to record a CD of specially written pieces by local musician and composer Dave Nelson.

The grant, of £3,930 came from Calderdale Council's Youth Opportunity Fund. Two of the band's members Heather Plumpton and Sian Bladon, both 17 decided to apply for the funding.

Sian, a cornet player, and Heather, the band's only tuba player, both sit on the band committee. Heather, a student at Greenhead College, Huddersfield and Sian, a sixth former at Calder High, said they were thrilled to be given the grant.

"We are all very grateful for the money and really excited about recording the new pieces," said Heather.

The grant is given to 13 to 19 year olds by a panel made up of other young people who help decide where the money should be awarded.

Youth Opportunity Fund development worker Karen Brooke said: "The young people on the grants panel felt that the application from the young people in the Hebden Bridge Junior Brass Band was an exciting opportunity to showcase their work and we are looking forward to receiving a copy of their final piece of work."

Nice waste of tax payers money.

"We are all very grateful for the money and really excited about recording the new pieces"

I bet they are........could not they have get a loan?
Perhaps then they wouldn't have been 'really excited' if they paid for it themselves.

I pretty much have to agree with #1. Who actually likes brass band music anyway?? Apart from my mum, obviously. I can't stand it myself.

(Incidentally, Dave Nelson was my piano teacher.)

A terrible waste of funds. As they are a junior brass band probably rubbish anyway.

Give me the £4k and i will record them on my denon tape deck then write to CD at a cost of about £300 then will enjoy a very relxing break with the other (over inflated) sum

My question is how come youngsters get to form a panel and decide how money is spent?
Here in Real World we never get the chance to decide anything, even though we do have mock choice sessions.
We have the Cabinet, with their Cauldron always on the boil, full of nasty money consuming abortive plans and other furtive things.
