Bid to cut domestic violence rates

NEW measures have been agreed to try to reduce incidents of domestic violence in Calderdale, which last year topped 3,500.
Nearly half of those reported to the police were repeat offences within the same household, councillors were told.
Domestic violence is one of the main causes of homelessness and many agencies are working together on the issue including the Calderdale Women's Centre, which gets cash from the council and other sources.
The latest plan approved by Calderdale Council's Cabinet calls for closer working with schools to support children who have encountered domestic violence, and a specialist court to provide more support to victims and increase prosecution rates.
"Domestic violence has a long-term effect and can cause long-term damage to children's well being," said community services spokeswoman Amanda Byrne (Con, Sowerby Bridge).
