But Mac, the seven-stone dog found abandoned in woodland in Halifax, has finally found a family – and it's all thanks to the Courier.

Craig Norris, Alison Hird and their three children, of Huddersfield Road, Wyke, have adopted the lovable foxhound crossbreed after seeing his plight on the Courier website.

Mrs Hird, 41, said: "He might be big but he's as beautiful as they come.He can be a little clumsy but he's so loving and placid. I saw him on the Courier website and it was love at first sight.

"We all agreed he was adorable."

Mac's struggle was highlighted in the Courier after RSPCA staff became concerned his size was stopping families adopting him.

He spent more than three months with the charity – one of the longest stays last year.

But his new family – which includes Samuel, 14, Laura, 12, three-year-old Lilli, cross collie Archie and cat Tabs – are delighted he has joined them.

Mrs Hird said: "Mac follows Archie around. It's very sweet.

"And the kids are forever spoiling him."

Alex Darwell, rehoming officer with the RSPCA, said: "We all miss him but we're glad he's got a family. It's where he'll be happiest."
