A BLITZ on litter starts on Monday and Courier readers have a key role to play in improving our district.
The Big Clean-Up is a two-week programme launched by Calderdale Council which needs your help to highlight areas for action.
Neighbourhood clean-ups are plan-ned, grot spots will be targeted and bulky waste removed by the authority's street clea-nsing teams.
A pantomime dame known as Ann T Litter will hit the streets with council staff at Northgate, Halifax, on Monday to highlight the issue of litter on our streets. Neighbourhood clean-ups up will follow in Elland, Pellon and Sowerby, and grot spots in Brighouse and Siddal will be wiped clean.
The campaign ends with a "Clean the World'' weekend from September 15 to 17 when clean-ups take place around Halifax at Beechwood Park, Ogden Water, Scarr and Long Wood at Savile Park, and Red Beck at Shibden Park.
Cabinet member for community services Amanda Byrne urged the community to highlight problem areas.
"The campaign provides the opportunity to focus attention on creating a cleaner Calderdale by targeting areas and opportunities for the public to dispose of their waste," she said.
Also, to kick-start the project the council is offering free bulky waste removal for the first 200 callers who ring 0845 245 7000.
It is the biggest campaign of its kind organised by the council which has a good record of keeping the streets clean.
In a recently published report Calderdale Council came 18th out of 399 councils in a clean-up league table and Coun Byrne said they didn't want to become complacent.
"Everyone is responsible for keeping Calderdale clean and we must all work together," she said.
The council spends £1.4 million annually on street cleaning services and clears approximately 2,800 tons of rubbish from the district.
Over 90,000 tons of household waste is collected each year. A fifth of that is recycled.
