SECURITY cameras could be used as part of Calderdale Council's war on fly-tippers.

The cameras are just one measure the council is considering in the battle to clear up the district.

Every year the council spends thousands of pounds getting rid of illegally dumped waste.

Between April 2007 and January 2008, it spent £107,000 cleaning up Calderdale.

A spokesman for the council said: "There are a number of fixed CCTV cameras that the environmental health services enforcement team has access to.

"The council also has provision to deploy remote, mobile, stand-alone cameras."

Councillor Graham Reason, portfolio holder for health and social care, said: "Calderdale Council will not tolerate littering of any kind.

"Fly-tipping is illegal and there is no excuse for this kind of behaviour. We are putting in place a number of measures to prevent this kind of behaviour.

"If you have a large amount of waste then you can visit one of Calderdale's numerous household waste recycling sites."

Last year the council issued 30 fines for domestic waste being dumped and 23 for commercial waste.

There were 609 fines for littering.

Fly-tipping has increased ever since the council have said that you cant use a van unless you get a pass! A pass that you can only use for one trip. Still this is no excuse to fly tip however shows that the change wasnt any good!

Halifax lad you are right.

If the council allowed anyone (from calderdale) to take rubbish in whatever vehicle they liked then there is no excuse for fly tipping, what the hell will cctv do to stop fly tipping, nothing it will move it somewhere else.

JP - exactly. They only way CCTV will stop it is if they put cameras on every stretch of road in Calderdale, which of course they both shouldn't and couldn't. It just shifts the problem. Let us use tips etc. more readily and punish those caught fly tipping, not with a slap on the wrist but with a punishment fit for the crime.

Cast your mind back some 10 or 15 years ago, not long after the Lee Bank Transfer station was closed on Sundays?

So much junk was dumped at the gates that they employed the chaps who were normally there to assist in dumping your rubbish, as security staff to tell anyone turning up when closed.....'if you dump that outside we will take your registration number and report you to the police. Bring it back tomorrow'!

Fly tipping levels went through the roof!

Cllr Reason; put this in your portfolio....

Make it easier for people to legitimately dispose of unwanted waste and fly tipping levels will drop. Make it harder, and the beds, rubbish and tyres will continue to be dumped on our out of the way areas and fly tipping levels will go up.

This is not rocket science.

Instead of investing in cameras, spend the money on extending the opening hours and get rid of the ridiculous palava you have to go through if you have borrowed a van to get rid of rubbish!
WAKE UP CALDERDALE COUNCIL!!!AAAAAAAGH!!!!!!!
