STEPS to close a Halifax school and open an academy could take a step forward next week.
Calderdale Council Cabinet is to decide on Wednesday whether to close Holy Trinity Senior School to make way for the proposed North Halifax Academy.

The closure process has to start now if the new school is to open in September 2010. But it will not be closed unless a feasibility study comes back in favour of the academy.

Consultation on the plans will take place between November 4 and December 21. A final decision on closing Holy Trinity will not be made until April 2009, when the consultation and feasibility study have been completed.

Cabinet member for Children and Young People's Services, Craig Whittaker, said: "In making this decision we want to take into account the concerns of organisations, the local community and above all, the needs and aspirations of parents and pupils who will be affected."

But Sue McMahon, Calderdale NUT division secretary, said: "The sole purpose behind the scheme is to get a new build for Holy Trinity. We have serious reservations as to why this successful school is being pushed into becoming an academy two years before the new building is ready."

the whole idea of an "academy" is ridiculous ..... most parents are against the idea and yet the council and powers that be have pushed the motion through : Calderdale will have this academy no matter what we think, say, do or what we want ..... it is obscene that we are not even fully consulted on this matter : there is no way on earth my child will be going to this super school ...... we need more quality schooling in Calderdale : not a huge place to put certain children who do not and will not work hard to gain qualifications .... I have been against this since the start : but no matter how hard we protest it WILL happen because the Council want it to be so ..... plus they get more money and we get lower standards of education - simple
