PRIMARY pupils are again topping the league tables as the latest test results are released.
Key Stage 1 assessments for seven-year-olds show Calderdale's children are reaching the expected standards.
In reading, 84 per cent got Level 2 or above, with 80 per cent achieving the standard in reading, and 89 per cent in both maths and science.
This is in line with the national average and better than most other districts in West Yorkshire.
Craig Whitaker, Calderdale Council's education representative, said: "It is great to see we are coming out top again in West Yorkshire and across the range of the national average is a good place to be.
"It is an extremely good result for parents, teachers and pupils."
But a teachers' union has questioned the need for official assessments and testing.
Sue McMahon, of Calderdale NUT, said: "Teachers continually assess and are aware of the progress their pupils are making.
"Regular reporting is already being given to parents.
"This is an unnecessary, unhelpful exercise and a waste of public money."
Children's minister Kevin Brennan said that more must be done to make sure all children get good levels of literacy and numeracy.
He said: "There are no quick fixes but more can be done, especially for children who are really struggling with basic literacy and numeracy, and for those children who, with a bit of help, could reach the next level up." He said a programme to help those struggling with reading had had an incredible impact and a similar maths programme will start this September.
There will be a review of the primary curriculum and new standards for nurseries and childcare will also give younger children a head start with play-based learning.
