Calderdale treasures go for thousands

CALDERDALE treasures have exceeded expectations by bringing in thousands at auction.
Old photographs including pictures of the Prince of Wales' visit to Halifax in 1926, maps and other goodies tempted bidders at the Harrogate sale to pay well above guide prices.
Images of the Prince's visit had an estimated price of between £200 and £400 – but they went for £1,050.
An Insurance Plan of Halifax in seven hand-coloured lithographed sheets with a guide price of £450 to £550 went for £900.
A bundle of printed ephemera, pamphlets and off-prints relating to or printed in Halifax attracted four times its estimated worth.
And a collection of books about Halifax more than doubled its estimate of between £100 and £200 when it sold for £480.
But an engraved map of the River Calder around Sowerby Bridge from 1958 only just made its guide price at £110. And work by Thomas Wright about the town made just £40, well under its £100 to £200 estimate.
Copies of an 18th-century factual work about Gibbet law, also fell short when one failed to sell and the other sold for £30 under a guide of £70.
