Halifax's planned Broad Street development will house council offices instead of apartments under a revised scheme.
Senior councillors are working on a new strategic plan for town centre regeneration which would see two council buildings closed and staff moved into Broad Street.

Under the scheme, Halifax Central Library and the Northgate House offices block would both be closed and the land sold for retail development.

A planned £12 million refurbishment of Northgate House would be abandoned.

A council source said the scheme would not be any more costly. The rethink was prompted by the uncertain property market. Retail, leisure and hotel elements of the scheme will go ahead. Any extra cash could go on a sport, higher education and conference facility at the Shay Stadium site.

nearly 30 years in the planning and the council still can't make their minds up over this developement

surely its time for the people of halifax to wake up and see these councillors for what they really are and that is a bunch of do-gooding people with attitude problems but with no commercial sense between them

At least some people do try to do good. Others just sit on the side and complain. If you aren't part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

Surely its not a case of doing good against sitting on the fence. Our council are notorious for prevaracating therefore nothing is acheived. Residents of Calderdale have plenty to complain about and it it time the elected councillors listened and took action.

This might be a touch of realism and sense. The idea of more flats is ludicrous in a vastly over-supplied market

I wouldnt go as far as to say "a bunch of do-gooders", I would describe them as pigs at the trough, grubbing as much money into thier own pockets as possible dreaming up pie-in-the sky doomed to fail projects, meanwhile stringing the public at large with thier SUPPOSED good intentions............WAKE UP!!!!!!!

What a waste of time and money.. Hows about we take money off them and get more policing on the streets, or better educational facilities so that the future kids dont grow up stabbing, stealing or addicted to drugs instead of lining their own pockets.. think ahead and not just about now...

Its disgusting they cant get there act together. This must have been going on for 8+ years now and still no cinema etc. They should go have a look at the complex in Bradford, it puts Halifax to shame.

By the time there is a cinema in Halifax I wont be living here!!
