Council offices to replace flats in Broad Street plaza plan

Halifax's planned Broad Street development will house council offices instead of apartments under a revised scheme.
Senior councillors are working on a new strategic plan for town centre regeneration which would see two council buildings closed and staff moved into Broad Street.
Under the scheme, Halifax Central Library and the Northgate House offices block would both be closed and the land sold for retail development.
A planned £12 million refurbishment of Northgate House would be abandoned.
A council source said the scheme would not be any more costly. The rethink was prompted by the uncertain property market. Retail, leisure and hotel elements of the scheme will go ahead. Any extra cash could go on a sport, higher education and conference facility at the Shay Stadium site.
