Council's pledge for eyesore area facelift

COUNCILLORS have agreed to use compulsory purchase powers if necessary to buy land for affordable housing, a new library, shops and space for a medical centre on a Halifax estate.
It would also enable an eyesore which was once the Jumples pub to be returned to productive use.
"This derelict site has been detrimental to Mixenden for long enough," said the council's community services spokeswoman Amanda Byrne.
"We are keen to start work with Pennine Housing 2000 on the new community hub and support investment already taking place in Mixenden."
Calderdale Council intends to replace a row of boarded up shops.
Councillor Byrne (Con, Sowerby Bridge) said: "The vast majority of homes in this area have already been substantially improved and Mixenden has once again become a popular place to live.
"We are working together to provide attractive, modern accommodation for a variety of local public services as well as providing new and much needed shopping facilities."
The compulsory purchase order will only be used as a last resort and negotiations are continuing with land owners.
Once bought, the council will immediately sell the land to Pennine Housing.
Further public consultation on proposals for the community hub is due to take place later this month.
The Jumples pub was demolished in the 1990s and planning permission was granted for a small supermarket on the site but subsequent plans for housing were turned down.
The site was named and shamed by the Courier in 2005 as part of a campaign to restore pride in the area.
