A LIBERAL Democrat councillor has gone over to the Conservatives just a week after he was re-elected.
Keith Watson stood for Greetland and Stainland ward under the Liberal Democrat banner.
But yesterday he told the party he was resigning and will be joining the Conservatives, who control the council.
Liberal Democrat group leader Janet Battye said: "This is shameful, within a week of having been re-elected as a Liberal Democrat councillor.
"We feel it is disloyal to his ward residents, who thought they were electing a person under one banner and actually find he is something else.
"We have asked him to do the honourable thing and resign his seat and stand in his new colours for re-election, but he has refused."
Conservative group leader Ann McAllister said Coun Watson was in the process of applying to the party and would be sitting on the Conservative bench next week.
"I am delighted to have an able and excellent ward member joining our party," she said.
"This is a decision he has made after long consideration and my understanding is that he does not feel that the Liberal Democrats are serving the people of the lower valley that he was elected to represent."
She added: "I know he will be an asset within the Conservative group. He knows what the people want and he feels that they would be better served under a Conservative administration."
Councillor Watson was unavailable for comment.

Words can't spell out what I think of people like this. He was elected as a lib - people did not vote for him (Well some will have), but most voted for him because of the party he represented.
This is even worse (IMO) because it's so soon after the elections.
TBH I was certain the tories had a policy of not accepting defectors on the council. Oh well.

What a disgrace. Being a Greetland resident and a voter for Councillor Watson because I feel the Lib party do a decent job locally, I am disgusted. I agree that he should be forced to stand down and stand for re-election - there is no way a Tory would get in around here.

He was a misfit with the LibDem's and he will be a misfit with the Conservative's. The LibDem's will be glad to see the back of him. None of his own party had any time for this self opinionated little man. How this guy ever became a Councillor is beyond me. Cretin!

it should be made a ruling that when a person (either a councillor or MP) changes parties, the seat in questioned should then be put up for election. as pointed out above, i too vote for a party and not an individual, and would also feel aggrieved. i bet you 100% the council would act if an elected counciller from (for example) labour moved over to the BNP.

the voters put their trust in him and he has betrayed them and he should be forced to resign the mans a disgrace but you can bet he stays on the council gravytrain

I voted for Keith, the man, not for his party, as I have been impressed with the way he has looked after local constituents.
I can understand how the LibDems feel though. But how many councillors have done this in recent years - five? six? If Councillor Battye feels so strongly why can't she submit a rule change on the lines above? I don't think she will - the Lib Dems accept someone from another party with open arms. The name Nick Yates springs to mind!

Well in one respect it was bound to happen. When the local Lib-Dems can only focus on banning typhoo tea in Council Offices, and spending £5,000 of our ratepayers money on a "poof" enquiry (and call it money well spent!), one has to ask if they have lost touch with reality?

At one time you could have weighed the Lib-Dem votes - but now their majorities are very small. Cllr Battye herself only got back in by 53 votes. Until they start focussing on real issues they will lose more Cllrs.
