A MOTORIST and his teenage passenger had to be cut from their car on Tuesday night after they crashed with such force into a lamp post it was ripped from the ground.
Three fire crews from Halifax, Mytholmroyd and Todmorden spent nearly an hour rescuing the couple from the vehicle - which was so badly smashed up road police experts remain unsure today what type of car it was.

Reader Nigel Barratt took this picture of the car wrapped round the lamp post with police and fire fighters in attendance.

Watch manager Peter Rushby said: "The car was completely wrapped round the lamp post so it was an incredibly difficult operation to undertake.

"There was a girl in her late teens who we cut out first. The driver, a man in his 20s, was positioned under the car, which made the whole process even more delicate."

He added the crash, at 8.19pm on Burnley Road, Mytholmroyd, meant the road was closed off for more than an hour.

The couple - who were both conscious throughout the rescue - were taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary with extensive injuries.
