AN accident blackspot where three cars crashed in the space of just 30 minutes had not been gritted, it is claimed.
The trio of vehicles – a Peugeot 206, a Toyota Avensis and a Ford Ka – all slammed into walls and crash barriers at the same hilltop bend in Boothtown Road, approaching Queensbury, on Friday morning.

One driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The other two were left in shock.

Calderdale Council has been accused of putting lives at risk and failing to treat the notorious stretch of road in the morning.

Gritting teams had gritted the exposed route on the busy A647 between Halifax and Queensbury the night before after forecasters predicted ice and frost.

Joanne Scaife, who lost control of her Ford Ka and ploughed into a wall after hitting black ice, said: "This has to be one of the most dangerous roads in the district.

"For it not to be gritted is disgusting.

"There could easily have been a mass pile-up, and that could have led to loss of life. It's not even worth thinking about."

Mrs Scaife, 38, of Ashlar Grove, Queensbury, was driving the last of the three cars which crashed at the spot between 6.45am and 7.15am.

She said: "I was taking my daughter to work in Halifax and as I drove down the road I saw these two cars had crashed and I thought what rotten luck for them.

"So on my way back I was going carefully around the bend when I lost control. I spun round and for a moment I thought I was going to plough into the people waiting for the police to come."

She said a fourth car also skidded as she waited but it managed to avoid hitting the wall by inches. The road – linking Halifax and Bradford – was later closed for a short time and traffic diverted via Swalesmoor Road and Ploughcroft.

Police are investigating the causes of the accident but are understood to have requested gritting at the scene.

David Newton, group engineer at Calderdale Council, said the weather forecast received on Thursday highlighted sub-zero temperatures in Calderdale overnight.

"In anticipation of the forecast, the gritting teams were mobilised and Boothtown Road, which is categorised as a primary route, was gritted on Thursday night.

"We were informed of the accidents on this stretch of Boothtown Road on Friday morning and went out to spread salt at the site of the accident."

So, the council gritters had not been out? And it's their fault? Come on people, we are all well aware of the weather forecasts and how treacherous our roads can become BEFORE the gritters are sent out! Sounds like these drivers may have been to blame for their own misfortunes!

The one and only time I was involved in a accident with frost on the road was many years ago ----- over 30 years ------ and that was my fault, I was driving faster than the suitable speed for the situation. Perhaps we have a similar situation here, do not blame the council, blame yourself, while some in Calderdale are less than desirable they cannot grit ALL of the roads ALL of the time to take care of less than best drivers.

'AN ACCIDENT BLACKSPOT where three cars crashed in the space of just 30 minutes had not been gritted, it is claimed.'
There is a clue in the lead about this headline......
a)Anyone from the Calderdale area should and does know its an accident blackspot (Ashlar Grove in Queensbury is only a spit away into Bradfords area)
b) It was cold
c) It was forecast the night before there would be frost and ice on the roads
d) If you cant stop your car in bad weather conditions YOU ARE DRIVING TOO FAST!!!!

Take responsibility for your own actions instead of blming other people!

Wonder how long it will be before Fiona gets on the 'It was the police's fault' bandwagon??!!

Correct its the blame someone else culture, its not my fault, its always the drivers fault they have hold of the steering wheel and foot on the accelorator. If you can handle the car in all conditions give your licence up or learn.

We all know the speed people drive on this road, a few of them are finally caught out and try to blame somebody else.

I think the police should arrest the 3 drivers on the grounds of driving without due care and attention and dangerous driving

There is often a discrepancy btween how well gritted this same road is either side of the Calderdale/Bradford boundary adjacent to Swales Moor Road.

It's a disgrace that these people are looking to blame someone else for their accidents! If there is no third party involved in an incident, it can be only one persons fault THE DRIVER OF THE VEHICLE!
To blame the gritters for not gritting is dispicable and an underhand way of trying to lay blame on someone else!
These men who grit our roads every winter lose up to 50% of their personal time throughout the winter months in order to keep us mobile, which I think is a sterling effort! The roads were grited on Thursday night, and I'm sure that after gritting all the other primary, secondary and minor routes, they would have been starting the processs all over again on the road in question! Give them a break, they can't just keep gritting the same road all day and night!
