TWO Brighouse hairdressers proved themselves a headline act by scooping first and second place in a national championship.
Michael Richards and Joe Mercer both work at Taylors and Co, Bethel Street, Brighouse.

They took the prizes in the under-25s section of the National Hairdressers' Federation British Open Championships.

In first place was 19-year-old Michael, from Bradford, who started hairdressing three and a half years ago.

He said it was fantastic to win. "I was a little bit surprised because I thought Joe had got me," he said.

Joe, 22, from Pudsey, Leeds, came second.

The pair competed in two sections of the championship, which was held at a Gateshead hotel. First they had to create an artistic blow-dry, then complete a classic haircut.

* The federation's Yorkshire Hairdressing Championships will take place on Sunday at Jumpin Jaks, Halifax.
